"Dazzle" (sold)

This painting of Fairfield Beach looking out to the Trial Islands Lighthouse was also inspired by a plein air work. Part of the challenge of every painting is to decide what it is really about. It turns out this painting is about the striking light coming in from the right, even though the light source (the sun!) is not in the frame. It was truly blindingly bright reflecting off the water and beach, which made for a wonderful contrast with the strong orange ground and the edgy log-like shapes.
